Establishing if You Are Struggling With Addiction

Addiction is the result of a substance use disorder, also known as a SUD. A diagnosable mental illness, SUDs impact each individual differently and to different levels of severity.

Substance use disorder stages are defined by the U.S. National Library of Medicine as:

  • Experimental use – Typically involves peers, done for recreational use; the user may enjoy defying parents or other authority figures.
  • Regular use – The user misses more and more school or work; worries about losing drug source; uses drugs to “fix” negative feelings; begins to stay away from friends and family; may change friends to those who are regular users; shows increased tolerance and ability to “handle” the drug.
  • Problem or risky use – The user loses any motivation; does not care about school and work; has obvious behavior changes; thinking about drug use is more important than all other interests, including relationships; the user becomes secretive; may begin dealing drugs to help support habit; use of other, harder drugs may increase; legal problems may increase.
  • Addiction – Cannot face daily life without drugs; denies problem; physical condition gets worse; loss of “control” over use; may become suicidal; financial and legal problems get worse; may have broken ties with family members or friends.

If you or a loved one falls on this scale, addiction treatment may be needed.  But what type of care is necessary?

Determine the Type of Care You Need

Rehabilitation programs, like substance use disorders, are separated by severity.

The most severe substance use disorders indicate the need for residential inpatient treatment. Through this process, individuals are continuously monitored and support through detoxification and addiction treatment. These programs often last between 30 and 90 days, with the goal being for clients to build a firm foundation of rehabilitation.

The next step down from residential inpatient treatment occurs as partial hospitalization and intensive outpatient treatment. In both of these programs, clients live at home but attend daily treatment at a facility. This moderately less structured treatment program is good for clients with mild to moderate substance use disorders and is most effective when utilized following a residential inpatient program.

The last main type of care you might access is outpatient treatment. In outpatient treatment, a client attends scheduled group and individual counseling a few times per week to build and enhance the coping and self-management skills they’ve learned through their time in rehabilitation.

If you are still unsure which treatment program may be best for you, contact us at Valley Recovery. Our supportive and compassionate staff will be able to support you and provide more information about what the best program for you might be.

What Are My Options After Completing Rehab?

There is no cure for addiction. Substance use disorders can be managed through structured and continued treatment. After completing rehab, clients should access aftercare available to them through their treatment center or through local AA and NA meetings.  The goal of this being to remain vigilant and maintain a support structure of individuals with similar experiences.
