Substance Abuse Intensive Outpatient Programs
Designed for Long-Term Recovery
intensive outpatient programs in California
At any given time, more than 21 million American adults struggle with a substance use disorder. Of those, as few as 10% will ever seek or receive potentially life-saving addiction treatment. With so many addiction treatment centers across the nation, it can be difficult to understand why so many people forgo treatment and allow drugs or alcohol to progressively impact their lives.
There are several reasons why people choose not to seek treatment. For some, the decision is financial, and others believe their illness isn’t “bad enough” to need treatment. Still, others may want to seek treatment but not know how to reach out for help. Across the United States, there are thousands of addiction treatment centers, with several hundred here in California. Each facility offers various levels of care (inpatient, intensive outpatient, outpatient, etc.), different treatment models, and varying treatment specialties. The best type of treatment for you will be based on your unique treatment needs and goals. So, how do you decide which level of care can best help you get sober?
Finding the Right Treatment
What’s the Difference Between IOP and Outpatient?
All addiction treatment levels of care share the same goal-ensuring you receive comprehensive addiction treatment care to help you achieve sobriety. Inpatient programs are intensive programs that require participants to “live” on-site at the facility throughout their program. Inpatient programs provide access to 24/7 medical, emotional, and nutritional support. Inpatient programs are typically considered a “better fit” if you struggle with a severe addiction or have completed addiction treatment before and have experienced a relapse. The residential nature of inpatient programs removes triggers and relapse opportunities.
Outpatient drug and alcohol treatment programs, on the other hand, allow participants to work towards healing while living at home. Outpatient programs are flexible programs structured around your specific treatment needs. Outpatient rehabs provide opportunities to attend group therapy and peer support groups in the evening to accommodate those who have work or family obligations during the day. Because of the less intensive nature of many outpatient programs, it may take longer to achieve your sobriety goals.
Intensive outpatient programs also provide treatment in a setting that allows you to reside at home or in a sober living. Intensive outpatient programs are often a bridge between inpatient and outpatient programs. They work as a transitional step for those who’ve completed an inpatient residential program but are not ready yet to integrate back into their home environment without continued support. Intensive outpatient programs are also an excellent option for those with a “mild” addiction, minimal co-occurring mental health concerns, and a safe and stable support structure at home (or outside the treatment environment).

Understanding Substance Abuse
Intensive Outpatient Programs
The most significant benefit to a substance abuse intensive outpatient program is the ability to remain immersed in your day-to-day obligations while still working towards lasting sobriety. Intensive outpatient programs (IOP) provide a similar level of treatment service to inpatient treatment programs. An intensive outpatient program may be the right step for you if you have a “mild” addiction, minimal mental health concerns, and a safe, stable support structure at home. Although being at home is one of the critical benefits of an intensive outpatient program, it can also be the biggest challenge. For some, this ongoing exposure to the triggers and situations that led to and furthered addiction may contribute to relapse.
One of the primary treatment elements in an intensive outpatient alcohol treatment program is group therapy. Participation in a group treatment setting allows you to give and receive support from your peers, improve communication skills and, through interaction with peers, learn how to be in a social environment without using drugs or alcohol. Therapy sessions are also designed to help you learn and practice safer, healthier coping skills necessary to manage relapse triggers after treatment ends.
Ensuring long-term sobriety
What to Expect at an Intensive Outpatient in California
Intensive outpatient programs are frequently recommended for those who have recently completed an inpatient program or for those whose addiction is considered mild or moderate based on a medical or mental health professionals’ evaluation. Due to the nature of an intensive outpatient program, monitoring is limited, and opportunities for trigger exposure and relapse are increased compared to inpatient residential programs.
Intensive outpatient rehabs use several different therapy models to help patients achieve sobriety and maintain recovery. The most common of these include cognitive-behavioral therapy, motivational interviewing, and other similar behavioral therapy models. Some intensive outpatient programs also incorporate 12-step programs (or similar secular programs) into their therapy treatment approaches.
The first step of most intensive outpatient programs is a comprehensive evaluation. During your evaluation, your treatment team will have the opportunity to learn more about your treatment needs. They will also ask questions about your medical and mental health history. It is important for your treatment team to clearly understand your “whole” health picture. Research shows as many as 50% of those who struggle with an addiction also have an underlying mental health disorder. This is known as having a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorder. It is essential for treatment to address both conditions simultaneously as they often feed off or worsen each other. Treating one while not addressing the other often leads to relapse.
After your assessment is complete, the teams at our facilities Valley Recovery Center and Treatment will work with you to develop an individualized treatment plan based on your unique addiction treatment needs. Your treatment plan will also consider other essential needs such as medication management, co-occurring mental health conditions, and co-occurring medical conditions. Part of the treatment planning process will consist of developing a schedule for how many days and hours you will attend treatment each week. Intensive outpatient programs often offer individual and group therapy sessions on a flexible schedule to accommodate employment or family care needs. If your treatment needs or the speed of your recovery change during treatment, your plan can be modified to accommodate these changes.
Throughout your intensive outpatient program, you will participate in various therapy sessions designed to help you develop coping skills needed to maintain long-term sobriety. Some of these skills include relapse prevention education, addiction education, skill-building, and employment education. Sessions at an intensive outpatient are a combination of settings, including individual counseling, group therapy, family therapy, and 12-step (or similar secular) groups.

Our IOP Drug Treatment Programs
Our intensive outpatient drug treatment programs provide treatment designed to address your physical, psychological, and emotional needs. After your initial assessment, you will work closely with your treatment team to create a treatment plan focused on your unique needs. Addiction is a disease unique to the individual, and therefore, it is essential for your treatment plan to be unique as well. Cookie-cutter treatment programs that focus on treating the addiction over the whole person are often unsuccessful.
Our intensive outpatient drug rehab in California uses many different therapies and programs to help you achieve and maintain lasting recovery. It is important to remember that the end of a treatment program does not mean you are “cured.” Addiction is a chronic relapsing disease. Data from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA) indicates as many as 60% of those who have completed an addiction treatment program will experience at least one incidence of relapse. Despite the high risk for relapse, it is not something everyone must experience. We understand maintaining recovery takes commitment and work.
At Valley Recovery Center and Treatment, we offer a variety of aftercare and sober living programs. Treatment is a vital first step towards healing, but healing is a process that continues long after treatment ends. We provide each of our patients with an alumni program designed to provide support and guidance when you need help overcoming the inevitable challenges you encounter on your recovery journey. As part of our alumni program, you will have the opportunity to interact with other program alumni at various stages of recovery.
You will also have the opportunity to engage in continued group sessions, peer support groups, or meetings with your therapist in a one-on-one setting to help you stay motivated in your sobriety and continue to work on essential relapse prevention skills.
